Appropriately named "our little Mozart of the Champs-Élysées" by Rossini for his fluent, elegant style and highly developed sense of characterization and satire, Jacques Offenbach composed over 100 works for the stage, most of them operettas. The Tales of Hoffmann -his only grand opera- had taken him years to complete and was closest to his heart. (It was not quite finished when he died in 1880.)
The work was based upon an 1851 play in which the poet E. T. A. Hoffmann takes part in three of his own stories, depicting his spiritual decline through three successive, failed, loves. Subtitled an "opéra fantastique," Les Contes d'Hoffmann was first produced at the Opéra-Comique in Paris on February 10, 1881, four months after Offenbach's death. But plagued by revisions and crucial alterations, it was not until its spectacular Berlin production in 1905 that the opera established its international popularity.
This Dover publication is a structurally revised edition of Choudens' 1907 vocal score, restoring the three central acts to their original order, while retaining the prologue and epilogue (Acts I and V) -fundamental revisions that are fully explained in the Publisher's Note and in Anne Lawson's Introduction to the Dover edition, an explicit overview of Hoffmann's background and history of revisions.
Vocal soloists, chorus members, and accompanists will find this carefully prepared vocal score to be an indispensable source for rehearsal and performance.

Libretto by Jules Barbier after the 1851 play by Barbier and Michel Carré based on the stories by E. T. A. Hoffmann.
